What you can expect from your counseling experience

Individuals (Adult)

Your first appointment will be 90 minutes in length. The first 30 minutes will be a dialogue about
counseling services, confidentiality, ethics, my professional style and background. This is your
chance to interview me and have some say so in whether or not you feel safe, comfortable, and
ready to engage in the counseling process. The regular 50-55 minute session will follow.
Sessions that follow will typically be 50-55 minutes in length.

I will be using a variety of tools, techniques, and assessments throughout your therapy to help
you heal, change, and "get better."

Individuals (Child)

The first appointment will be 90 minutes in length. The first 30-60 minutes will be a dialogue with
parent(s)/child about counseling services, confidentiality, ethics, my professional style and
background. I will take a list of concerns from parent(s) and child and begin formulating a
treatment plan (focus for treatment) during this first session which I will share with you to make
sure I am on the right track with the issues that you feel need to be addressed. For parent(s) and
child(ren), this is your family's chance to interview me and have some say so in whether or not
you feel safe, comfortable, and ready to engage in the counseling process.

Your child's age will help regulate my approach with your child. I do have a play room…for play
therapy purposes. I will meet your child at his/her level to help increase his/her self-esteem, selfregulation (behavior), focus, healing…loss/trauma, etc. You, as a parent, will be included in this process. I will work closely with you to help your child and your family. I do have some expertise regarding child and significant trauma. If your child has suffered a trauma, rest assured,

I will be able to "handle it" and help. I will be able to help you to "handle it" also. And- I will be able to help you learn how to help your child.

Couples

All of your appointments will be 90 minutes in length. During the first appointment, I will share
with you about counseling services, confidentiality, ethics, my professional style and background.
This is your chance to interview me and have some say so in whether or not you feel safe,
comfortable, and ready to engage in the counseling process. After this we will go ahead with the
first session. I typically require a 90 minute session with couples and family for this reason:
couples who come to therapy are typically hurt, confused, and overwhelmed. It takes a
significant amount of time to share those feelings and explore them. With a 55 minute session,
just when one is really getting at their hurt - it's time to go (this process repeats itself at
subsequent sessions …always getting to the hurt, but never getting through it…"We always fight
about the same things and never get anywhere."). With a 90 minute session - once we reach
this level, I, your therapist have a full 45 minutes to help you push through as an individual, as a
couple to bring about healing and change.

I will be using a variety of tools, techniques, and assessments throughout your therapy to help you heal, change, and "get better."
